Three Presbyteers Ep. 11 - A Humble Beginning
Show Notes Transcript

We take a swing at our first time using video with the podcast (available on YouTube) and get distracted by our beloved topic of food for a minute; then, we proceed to talk about the one word we would use to describe Jesus. The audio will be better in future episodes, but once we got going it was such a waste to not share the conversation. We hope this is a blessing to you!

[lc]:

all right welcome everybody to our actual first video four podcast or the three presbyters so this is i know right so matt and i are are taking it on and this is gonna be a really cool way for us to interact with other people around the country around the world whoever wants to talk to us just have a really cool idea of what we don't all have to be in huddleston virginia how about that so what do you think matt what do you liking so far about the video

[matt]:

right now i'm watching it on my side and it looks like i'm watching an old curate movie

[lc]:

yeah

[matt]:

yeah

[lc]:

well my camera is special in it like zoom it auto adjust really fast i don't have a fancy mac book

[matt]:

special

[lc]:

oh yeah so um you know recently you weren't at the event but what we did was we had that speed mingle and when

[matt]:

i

[lc]:

we

[matt]:

was

[lc]:

did the

[matt]:

there

[lc]:

speed mingo

[matt]:

for

[lc]:

one of

[matt]:

a

[lc]:

the

[matt]:

moment i was there for the ass cream sundays and then

[lc]:

hm

[matt]:

we went over for worship team practice

[lc]:

that might be record it's been just over a minute you've already brought up food speed mingle yeah you were practicing for worship and one of the questions that we had it was kind of like a speed date scenario sort of thing and the question was what is one word that friends would use to describe you so what do you think is one word that would describe you mat your friends would use not you

[matt]:

m funny maybe

[lc]:

any ambitious yeah

[matt]:

hm

[lc]:

okay okay

[matt]:

and they could

[lc]:

yeah

[matt]:

tag it was

[lc]:

um

[matt]:

funny looking

[lc]:

preemptiveyeah

[matt]:

i don't know

[lc]:

i i don't know what people would say overly energetic i've had people tell me that i'm the last person that needs an energy drink multiple times so that could be a possibility for me energetic

[matt]:

yeah

[lc]:

like that squirrel ever seen hood winked

[matt]:

yeah

[lc]:

the little the squirrel that drinks too much coffee and he runs that's

[matt]:

hm

[lc]:

what i think i remind people of mountain du makes he world go around actually there was this thing where i got really concerned and i

[matt]:

over

[lc]:

quit drinking

[matt]:

my moves

[lc]:

mountain

[matt]:

grated

[lc]:

for a little

[matt]:

right

[lc]:

while where

[matt]:

tennessee

[lc]:

what

[matt]:

yeah

[lc]:

they even they sell honey due in tennessee because even grow up there

[matt]:

dude

[lc]:

what flavor it is that's what flavor mountain do is i don't know i have one over next to me did you know that that's what flavor it is it's honey do

[matt]:

you can grow honey do

[lc]:

wild

[matt]:

in tennessee

[lc]:

called do you know okay i've been here a couple times now but i haven't been there as long as you so

[matt]:

you sure on your facts

[lc]:

okay but

[matt]:

on

[lc]:

anyways there was mountain dude yeah we'll look it up later maybe someone will correct me

[matt]:

as

[lc]:

but

[matt]:

a

[lc]:

i feel pretty confident it's honey dew flavors

[matt]:

says it's a citrisflavor drink

[lc]:

right

[matt]:

pretty sure the mountain

[lc]:

i've

[matt]:

dude

[lc]:

had

[matt]:

comes

[lc]:

so

[matt]:

up

[lc]:

much

[matt]:

old

[lc]:

mountain

[matt]:

pretty sure the mountain dude comes off the old slang term for moonshine

[lc]:

well it is addictive i was concerned that's nice your blur on my side but i know when this gets process i'll be able t see your eyebrows yeah i can i can see these

[matt]:

you

[lc]:

little

[matt]:

bore

[lc]:

pickles

[matt]:

on my

[lc]:

moving

[matt]:

side

[lc]:

up and down

[matt]:

i thought you're just moving so fast

[lc]:

weird

[matt]:

you're like er

[lc]:

no yeah i'm clear on my side at least on my vision and so like there was a spell on the freeway and a whole bunch of mountain des billet on the five outside seattle and

[matt]:

hm

[lc]:

they had to call in the hazardous team and mike it's kind of concerning that mountain dudes as has that team and it looks like an freeze and i drink it all the time so probably not the best thing but yeah so besides energetic i was talking with the youth last night and and using the same idea of one word and who is our example right is christ we need to be more like jesus christ and and the idea that what is the one word that eople would use to find christ and what would you say

[matt]:

um we talked about it earlier so i would say humble

[lc]:

well you already know the answer so a lot of people that dedicate their part of theology called christology they use the word humble as the overarching character trade that jesus has because uh you know everything that he did in his life especially says in philippians to that you know he was obedient to the point of death that that he wasn't conceited you know that he was selfless and such things that paraphrasing but the idea is that that we should be less self is self ish be more selfless and so i mean what do you think that looks like in in the christian today i mean because a lot of people what does the reason that they say that they don't want to go to church because they say oh it's full of hypocrites and like yeah that's not a secret we're still following people um but

[matt]:

is

[lc]:

do you

[matt]:

there

[lc]:

think

[matt]:

anything

[lc]:

the church is

[matt]:

can be involved in that people involved in it that you're not going to find hypocrites

[lc]:

definitely not leadership of countries know

[matt]:

i don't think there's anywhere that you're not going to find a hypocrite somewhere in the mix ye

[lc]:

yeah that's true i mean so they'll be hypocrites everywhere if you've been an organization or of any capacity you know whether it's a sports team or anything you have people that are going to be prideful self it and that's kind of what people tend to do right and we were talking earlier about cookies and this idea that if you have a plate and you have and you're taking the first batch of cookies out what

[matt]:

yeah

[lc]:

do you want to do you want to eat i said i'd eat the biggest cookie on there before i even shared anything and that's especially if it's snicker doodles be my favorite

[matt]:

hm

[lc]:

wh one would you eat

[matt]:

i like the small ones a lot of them oh

[lc]:

it feels like they're so small they couldn't be fattening

[matt]:

well you know when you get something a lot that's small kind of like the you know the thin auriosorthey're kind of small nd thin and

[lc]:

i don't know how i feel about this denarius feel you like then or i don't think i've ever bought then aureos ever

[matt]:

never

[lc]:

i feel like it's off i don't like double stuff areos either i feel like they're wrong to i like the weird flavors all those bizarre flavors like right

[matt]:

yeah

[lc]:

now they

[matt]:

proportional

[lc]:

have pumpkin mice

[matt]:

aurios

[lc]:

i feel symmetric i guess but can't really be symmetric because the icing is like right the icing is here's only one layer of icing it can't be symmetric but

[matt]:

hm

[lc]:

i don't know it feels proportionate it's my inner baker like you know like if you get a cup cake and if you ever had a cake at someone's party and then it was like way too much icing and you're like

[matt]:

hm

[lc]:

oh there's cake in there and it's like three inches of icing the proportions

[matt]:

yes

[lc]:

are wrong oh

[matt]:

you do know how to eat a cup

[lc]:

well

[matt]:

cake

[lc]:

yeah so eat a cup kick i've got a pretty big mouth

[matt]:

how do

[lc]:

i

[matt]:

you

[lc]:

can

[matt]:

eat

[lc]:

the whole thing you do it start on the side and work my way through how do you eat a cup cake

[matt]:

you take the cup cake

[lc]:

do you eat the icing first and

[matt]:

no

[lc]:

uh

[matt]:

you take the cup cake and then you cut half of the cake off the bottom then you flip it over on top and make it like a sandwich you eat it

[lc]:

can orient

[matt]:

like an aria you could turn it sideways like an aria

[lc]:

i've never heard of anyone doing that in my life

[matt]:

you're from the west

[lc]:

west the north west

[matt]:

the

[lc]:

the

[matt]:

north

[lc]:

beautiful

[matt]:

west

[lc]:

north west ere gongnahave

[matt]:

you

[lc]:

a whole episode about the wonderful things of the northwest just so you can

[matt]:

there's some

[lc]:

be

[matt]:

beautiful

[lc]:

cultured

[matt]:

things

[lc]:

and

[matt]:

on there

[lc]:

in

[matt]:

there's got to be a reason

[lc]:

how

[matt]:

you

[lc]:

far

[matt]:

moved

[lc]:

did you

[matt]:

there

[lc]:

make it on your trip

[matt]:

we just

[lc]:

oh

[matt]:

made it to jackson hole as far west as we made it

[lc]:

yeah yeah i got you so

[matt]:

yeah

[lc]:

know i had this discussion the other day i was thinking about if um what do you think heaven smells like and i was thinking about heaven smells to me it's smell like senaminroles

[matt]:

it sounds

[lc]:

yeah

[matt]:

like heaven

[lc]:

i don't think i

[matt]:

smells

[lc]:

smells

[matt]:

heavenly

[lc]:

like heaven

[matt]:

heavenly

[lc]:

well well true but i feel like it would smell like cinnamon rolls i don't think that ever get old me i mean i don't want all my clothes smelling like simon rolles but

[matt]:

maybe it

[lc]:

with

[matt]:

smells

[lc]:

your glorified

[matt]:

like something

[lc]:

body

[matt]:

different

[lc]:

i don't know

[matt]:

maybe it smells like something different for every person

[lc]:

that's where the discussion went if it smells different i mean i don't know what you're in to smell wise but old

[matt]:

yes

[lc]:

spice maybe

[matt]:

no

[lc]:

what would your sent be

[matt]:

um m yeah probably stake like the smell of the grill you know a stake on it

[lc]:

hm yeah

[matt]:

hm

[lc]:

i don't eat a lot of beef but i do like molubstake

[matt]:

yeah

[lc]:

yeah it's too hard on my stomach old but it's sad i know yeah so anyways that was a horrible detail of food and steak and cinnamon rolls and cookies

[matt]:

oh

[lc]:

and and so but person of christ what what you know if you were talking to someone for the first time and they were genuinely asking you about the person of jesus christ and what his defining character is and we've stablished that humility or being humble is certainly the most important thing that would define jesus in his ways how would you how would you lay that out to maybe a new believer

[matt]:

um m it's the picture of him is really being arms wide open and so with the humility comes love grace and the ability to get beyond our sins and so you know when people we look at people today and they're proud ful and they're arrogant and they're the complete opposite of being humble right they have a hard time forgiving people

[lc]:

right

[matt]:

when they're wrong and so this spirit of humility

[lc]:

yeah

[matt]:

is not accepting of our actions and not accepting of our sins but accepting of us he is creation so it's a love like we've never earthly experienced love even the people we love at times are going to let us down in and not always be humble so is this idea that crossed get beyond our faults even when we can't get beyond our own faults

[lc]:

yes definitely and you know the freedom that comes in that not knowing that you don't have to be perfect before perfect and holy god right

[matt]:

yeah

[lc]:

um

[matt]:

cause

[lc]:

i

[matt]:

you

[lc]:

guess

[matt]:

know

[lc]:

for

[matt]:

that's

[lc]:

me

[matt]:

what

[lc]:

like

[matt]:

that's what keeps a lot of people from morning to accept christ is this thought that we have to clean ourselves up before we come before the king right

[lc]:

hm

[matt]:

when really we come as we are he's arms wide open he does the clean not us

[lc]:

right yeah i've seen a lot of people struggle with that this idea i can't get baptized yet i can't i can't go to church yet i'm not a good enough person i'm like how do you think you're going to become more like jesus you should be around people that have you know him living in them and and being around a community that is aimed and looking towards him and so i find there's kind of two different types of believers there's believers that you mentioned grace and and i heard recently you know a small amount of grace is never enough we we needed an abundance

[matt]:

oh

[lc]:

and i thought that was a pretty powerful idea but you have people that go to one extreme right and they talk about graze and they talk about this idea that some people don't you know as baptists we believe you're eternally saved and it's not a license to sin but then people are like worried about about grace and being now hyper grace idea of like oh well you can you can just do whatever you want now and that's certainly not loving god right it's not loving god by by just going completely rogue thinking that you have fire insurance from hell or something that's ahead

[matt]:

here's how i always thought of it and had it put to me a couple of times is that

[lc]:

m

[matt]:

a lot of people are freed of getting saved because they don't want to give up the things that they want to do what they have to understand

[lc]:

h

[matt]:

is is when we accept

[lc]:

m

[matt]:

christ into our hearts when we have the holy spirit dwelling in us when when we have this life changing experience it's no longer about what i want to god changes or want to so the old

[lc]:

right

[matt]:

passes away right we become new and through that i no longer want to do the things that i used to want to do and i mean i found that my own life haven't you there's been things that

[lc]:

oh yeah

[matt]:

you've done in the past that you used to enjoy we've had discussions before recently right about things that we would have watched when we were younger but as we develop and become more mature as chris jens in life we go back and look at those things that years ago we remember sitting and laughing at and enjoying but we no longer find any pleasure in that as a matter of fact we end turning them off because we wonder why we ever

[lc]:

yeah

[matt]:

watched it and so there's lots of things in life that i used to want to do that god has changed that direction and i no longer have a desire to do it it's not like a constant

[lc]:

definitely

[matt]:

battle it every single thing that gets thrown in front of me yes there will be battles and yes there will be times where i'm tempted to do things that i know i shouldn't do but over all

[lc]:

right

[matt]:

it's a life filled with joy serving god is not giving up anything it's gaining everything

[lc]:

definitely so and then i find it's really important because a lot of times at least in the western christian world we we look at jesus and we spend a lot of time on his divinity but we don't spend enough time on his humanity and so this idea of him being a hundred percent man but also a hundred percent god at the same time and he put restraints on himself intentionally and so the humility is really one of the points that i can kind of point to in scripture in the gospels and see like that's the person of christ and so you can't you can't pull those two things apart you can't pull his his divinity and his his humanity but they're intertwined but you can't look at certain point of scripture and you can see that he wept that he was sad that you know he felt pain that he felt all the emotions that we feel and i think humility if you if you're really that humble like i think you're going to be far more vulnerable to feeling emotions right and you're not going to just ole them up and and so we have this this terrible idea of like this this effeminate jesus and a lot of the media that is produced where he's just very gentle i'm like that's not really it men concern we have emotions and i know a lot of big men that i've seen cry and and you're like wow i can't believe it's because they're moved so much when something important happens like at a baptism or you know someone accepting it's after many years of being prayed for those types of things and i think that's would you agree maybe that is an expression of humility because it's

[matt]:

hm

[lc]:

because it's showing a love of something that's good

[matt]:

yeah

[lc]:

and something that's glorifying god

[matt]:

making ourselves vulnerable

[lc]:

and i am horrible at that absolutely horrible that like i probably should be more emotional than i am and there's probably something blocking that and that's a totally different yeah

[matt]:

one of the tricks if you pull on those hair make tears come to your eyes you can do that maybe

[lc]:

you know i knew that was going to be your answer i just felt it was prophetic in my mind i knew that you were gonna talk about nose hairs

[matt]:

you get me

[lc]:

i catch you so so is there any other idea of like so you've got that and then i was going to say you've got christians that fall really heavy on the grace and maybe there there a true true conversion and we've touched on that before but then you've got ones that can like for me myself like the big thing i struggle with is more like a i'm very aware of my sin need i'm very aware of the things that i've done in my life that are in direct defiance to god i can look and see you know periods of my life that i was habitual sin and i felt bad the whole time so that's the spirit convicting me but because i knew it wasn't anything what christ would have right if jesus is sitting next to you would you do that no you sure wouldn't

[matt]:

ah

[lc]:

um m for me i feel like the enemy is a lot stronger making me kind of like hate myself more than i should like i have

[matt]:

hm

[lc]:

a lack of forgiveness for myself and that can be just as big of a problem for christians

[matt]:

m

[lc]:

either have ones that are like completely just way aloof and you know or you can have this other far extreme of people that are just they're very aware of their sin nature and they feel like maybe they need to to punish themselves or something or

[matt]:

i

[lc]:

or they don't deserve to be loved and but then you're taking away from god and his sovereignty right you're taking away from if if you deserve to be punished then jesus what didn't finish the work on the cross

[matt]:

we tend to leave ourselves in an equation that doesn't require us

[lc]:

m

[matt]:

um m all about god's grace and it's definitely an attack from satan

[lc]:

hm

[matt]:

i mean we believe that that we have eternal security through salvation and that we

[lc]:

right

[matt]:

won't lose that salvation if we really confessed our sins and believe jesus christ his lord and so

[lc]:

yes

[matt]:

um m

[lc]:

oh

[matt]:

the only thing that satan can do to us is try to render us effective right obviously can't

[lc]:

s

[matt]:

touch us can't he can't take away our salvation that's not something that we can lose but what he can do is to create so much doubt in our heads that we end up not doing anything and therefore we don't dis apple we don't lead others to christ we don't share

[lc]:

maybe

[matt]:

the

[lc]:

for

[matt]:

gospel

[lc]:

going to the church right

[matt]:

yeah

[lc]:

yeah

[matt]:

because because we think we're ineffective we can't do that we're not worthy to do that well truth is none of us are worthy billy graham wasn't worthy you can think

[lc]:

m

[matt]:

of multiple people that we would think of and set on a pedestal christians say these are the best of the best not one of them was working the saviour that they served was completely worthy and it's the same savior that we serve

[lc]:

right

[matt]:

he overcomes our faults

[lc]:

right

[matt]:

he has forgiven our sins we're the ones who drag it back when we should leave it at the foot of the cross and we're getting our own way

[lc]:

yeah and i can see satan being effective for a period in my life where i disqualified myself from going into ministry i said i wasn't good enough right and even as a christian i felt i still had the foundation of my belief but i wasn't serving in the church and i wasn't doing the things i needed to do and a lot of it had to do with my own like personal opinion of myself not being good enough and

[matt]:

hm

[lc]:

so that came through and that delayed me from going into ministry full time and um i mean and then i can say that since coming into you know leadership position church that i can it's a lot different as far as like my spirit i feel like i'm attacked more often spiritually but it's a way different way different way that satan goes about it than he did before it's like he switched you know he's only got so many tricks but he switched from trying to keep me from that and now that i'm in that position now he just kind of does other things i mean did you see in your own life like a change like when you finally responded to your call to ministry do you see what changes had to take place as far as how satan attacks you and and how you even conducted yourself right becase you're held to a higher higher standard doesn't mean you're

[matt]:

yeah

[lc]:

a better christian it just means that more people are paying attention to you yeah

[matt]:

i mean you have to evaluate things that you do things that you took

[lc]:

hm

[matt]:

for granted before now you have to really look at and and so okay how s this look from the outside you're standing on the outside and you're looking at mat the pastor

[lc]:

hm

[matt]:

how does it affect the people that are watching you and so yeah and satan does try to attack in different ways one of those things is if we were going to be cross locked we have to have humility we have to be humble the biggest thing that comes up in any downfall and we've seen it through the ages proud so the best of the best can start out for the greatest of reasons and be involved in great works for the kingdom but at some point in time if proud creeps in and we feel like we have any part in it then

[lc]:

m

[matt]:

it's gonna blow up in our face and you know that's that's going back to what you're talking about one of the things about filing like you weren't equipped but the truth is that when god calls god equipped we've seen that

[lc]:

right

[matt]:

scripturally we've read stories about it as a mater of factor right now we're reading a book fresh wind fresh fire that is about the beginnings of the brooklyn tabernacle and one of the things that people on the outside look at at brooklyn tavornacle is their massive and amazing cir through the years they've just been phenomenal right and done these great

[lc]:

oh yeah

[matt]:

recordings and written all this music when you read the book then you start looking at where we're at right now in chapter three and it's talking about

[lc]:

ye

[matt]:

the pastor's wife started leading the music and couldn't read any music they're writing these songs and they're

[lc]:

m

[matt]:

putting these worship teams together it's god's hand

[lc]:

yes yes

[matt]:

and i'm not saying that we shouldn't be well trained and we shouldn't seek to be well trained but sometimes god goes beyond training and he prepares us only the way that he can prepare us and he works through us in a way that shows his power and his glory and it just more proof to the outside world that god's hand is in it and that he is real he exists

[lc]:

i would say that you could even call that a miracle because

[matt]:

yes

[lc]:

you have a supernatural ability coming out that's so transcendent that music can be that in theory from the outside she shouldn't have been able to do music of that caliber and since

[matt]:

right

[lc]:

you can see that you can see where it's grown to and both him and his wife the symbols like you can see that the music really had a purpose to reach people we do today too there's plenty of churches that put their their music ministry at the beginning of as the main form of outreach and that can be good or bad you know it needs to be balanced of course

[matt]:

hm

[lc]:

sometimes i like to call it music ministry because people over use the word worship like yes it is worship but hearing the word read to you and being in a sermon and being community and end and living in life with with other christians is a form of worship too you can worship in so many other ways and i have a pie where it gets people over use the words exclusively for music like we're going to worship now like well you were worshiping prior to that i hope so i don't know how you feel about that but that's that's one of my triggers

[matt]:

yeah

[lc]:

yeah but at the end what you what did you see in that ministry with with this fresh wind fresh fire book which we both very much recommend that everyone should read whether they're attending arch you're not very powerful easy read very cool biography basically of what happened at a church that hat looked like it had no chance and has now become something much more in it pandit from there to other campuses you have umility it's the underlining thing and the whole prayer prayer is as lived as if a way that humility has lived out right in relation with god we're not going to be more humble if we're not in his presence but we're going to be more prideful and that's certainly the first sin and the root of essentially all sin is a pride and comes into idolatry or it comes into these other ways and end this idea that humble yourself before the lord and he'll bless you and you need to be consistent it may not happen in your timing it may take a couple of years of you consistently seeking him before you actually see the blessing come and then you can look back and you can go oh that's what god was doing the whole time he was working in me and refining me and building me into such a way that now i'm in a place where i can do this which i may not have been able to four

[matt]:

yeah

[lc]:

oh definitely so the humility of christ is definitely a topic that can go on and on and

[matt]:

oh

[lc]:

that we should all seek to be more humble but yeah say probably in our next episode we'll have something along the lines we'll definitely get david we'll try and get some other that's when we'll start getting some other guests and i have a friend who wrote a book that will be showing and a couple of other people that i've

[matt]:

ah

[lc]:

connected with and in the christian community online that i'm excited to introduce and talk to because they're new people to me but we're all into podcasting and spreading the word of jes in such a cool format m i don't know if you saw this did you see that twitter and you tube are expanding to podcast now

[matt]:

no

[lc]:

that bizarre think about twitter i'm not sure if we're going to be on twitter or not just because community is not necessarily the community i'm trying to reach always

[matt]:

eh

[lc]:

not saying if you're if you have a twitter account you're a bad person by any means but it tends it tends to be far more liberal and less conservative than our reference weird stuff right on musk not backing out after buying twitter and then and now they're going a go into podcast

[matt]:

yeah

[lc]:

like who would have ever guessed that what would you want to see as far future episodes matt like what what what do you do you want our audience

[matt]:

i want to

[lc]:

to

[matt]:

see

[lc]:

see

[matt]:

now

[lc]:

him

[matt]:

that

[lc]:

on

[matt]:

we have video capability to see pastor dave dance

[lc]:

that's true yeah

[matt]:

hm

[lc]:

and we could put an

[matt]:

i

[lc]:

extra

[matt]:

want you to be able

[lc]:

an

[matt]:

to

[lc]:

extra

[matt]:

say okay pastor dave dances out and then he starts doing something

[lc]:

i can't even really imagine what he gonna do basically what we tell most people is imagine a very holy version of michael scott from the office and that's that's pastor dave so he's not quite as dark as that comedy can be but he has a lot of the same kind of interesting timings and humor that that character has and it's kind of scary to see

[matt]:

m

[lc]:

so yeah and i'm trying to think what michael scott would do to dance is where my head was going and i'm like

[matt]:

oh

[lc]:

we might have to edit that out i don't know it depends

[matt]:

probably

[lc]:

depends

[matt]:

involve

[lc]:

what he

[matt]:

a

[lc]:

does

[matt]:

robot move or

[lc]:

oh

[matt]:

two i don't

[lc]:

i can imagine that something really dated because he's old we also

[matt]:

hm

[lc]:

high light the back of his head and and the

[matt]:

a

[lc]:

little bald spot so

[matt]:

maybe we could put

[lc]:

i see

[matt]:

a mirror like right over

[lc]:

i got

[matt]:

his

[lc]:

my

[matt]:

shoulder

[lc]:

heart just in the background as you see it at all times

[matt]:

yes no

[lc]:

okay

[matt]:

m

[lc]:

well for those of you that are looking forward to that we will there's lots of great things ahead so thanks matt for speaking on humility and we will see you guys the next episode
